`3 Idiots` surpasses Aamir`s last release `Ghajini`

Mumbai, Dec 28 (PTI) The weekend collection of the Aamir Khan starrer '3 Idiots' has surpassed the actor-filmmaker's last release 'Ghajini' by 30 per cent. The gross collection worldwide of '3 Idiots' is Rs 93 crore till Sunday night which is 30 per cent more than Aamir's last film 'Ghajini', trade sources said.

Similarly, the movie's paid previews garnered over Rs 9 crore worldwide, while Ghajini's paid preview collections were Rs seven crore. '3 Idiots' was released on December 24 with 1550 prints in over 1760 screens and overseas with 342 prints in over 366 screens.

This was the widest ever release for a Hindi film in India and overseas, a spokesperson of Vinod Chopra films, producers of the movie said. In UK, which is not considered Aamir Khan's market, '3 Idiots' has surpassed all films and reached just below 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna', an all time hit; that too during Christmas, when all theatres shut down and the box office business has been of only two days, the spokesperson said.

According to a spokesman of Cinemax multiplex, last week was revenue generating as far as box office returns were concerned. 'Avatar' is still ruling the roost and '3 Idiots' has also done well, he said.

'3 Idiots' had an opening of 85 per cent on Friday, 92 per cent on Saturday and 95 per cent on Sunday at Cinemax multiplexes, the spokesman added.
