Setting aside differences with the BJP, Samajwadi Party (SP) general secretary Amar Singh has showered praise on former prime minister and veteran BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee in his blog terming him the "last Mogul of contemporary India".
Though Singh refrains from commenting over the Liberhan Commission's indictment of Vajpayee along with other Sangh Parivar leaders for the Babri demolition, he admires the leader for being concerned about Muslims.
"Despite being in BJP he had concern for minorities also and I believe that he is the only BJP leader who was tolerated even by the Muslims," Singh writes in his post entitled "Atalji, the last Mogul", adding that though he did not like Vajpayee's party (BJP), "personally I always loved him".
Maintaining Vajpayee's tenure as prime minister was one of the best periods for the country, the SP leader says, "We entered in 21st century during his regime and nation could not have expected better leadership at that point of time."
Singh points out that his party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also holds "Atalji in very high esteem". Mulayam had condemned Congress MP Beni Prasad Verma for using un-parliamentary language against Vajpayee.
Although Singh makes a mention of Mulayam's speech in the Lok Sabha over the Liberhan report where he had also held Vajpayee responsible for Babri demolition, he skips the details cleverly. "I am not aware of my leader Mulayam Singh's Parliament speech that had rattled the sensibility of the ailing legendry leader," he writes.
The SP general secretary also recalls a meeting with Vajpayee at the Prime Minister's residence where he used "ill words" against Kalyan Singh and his protégé Kusum Rai. "To the best of my memory, I had never heard Atalji talking ill of anyone including known contemporary adversaries. But that day I could feel a tinge of sadness in his voice while mentioning Kalyan," he writes.
