In a party meeting held today, the Congress named Anu Chatrath as its candidate for the mayor's election scheduled for January 1.
The party has also decided to field Bhupinder Singh Badheri for the post of senior deputy mayor and Sheela Phool Singh for deputy mayor.
The nominations for mayor elections are to be filed on Monday. This year the post of the mayor has been reserved for a woman candidate.
Harjinder Kaur is the likely candidate for the post from the BJP-Akali Dal combine. Negotiations are still on for an alliance with the BSP. Sources say that while BSP has agreed to extend support to Harjinder, the party has still not taken a decision on the other two posts.
Party leaders have scheduled a meeting for Monday where a final decision will be taken. BJP has offered the post of senior deputy mayor to BSP in exchange of its support. Last time, BSP had abstained from participating in the election of the mayor and deputy mayor.
It had only extended support to candidate for senior deputy mayor, who was from Akali Dal.
In absence of support by BSP, BJP-Akali Dal combine would not be able to garner the requisite numbers for winning the election. In the 35-member House, 15 councillors are from Congress, 6 from BJP, one from Akali Dal, 4 from BSP and nine are nominated councillors, who are likely to play an important role in the election. Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal also has one vote.
Chatrath will contest for the post of mayor for the third time. She was elected mayor in 2005.
However, during the elections in 2007 when she was fielded against Harjinder, she had lost by one vote. Harjinder was elected for the post in 2001 too.
